The Star of Abundance (Lu Cun): Unlocking Prosperity in Zi Wei Dou Shu

abundance

In the celestial tapestry of Zi Wei Dou Shu, the Star of Abundance, or Lu Cun (祿存), is often seen as a power booster—akin to the iconic power-up mushroom in Super Mario. It amplifies strengths and mitigates flaws when paired with a major star, serving as a catalyst for growth and harmony. However, when left to stand alone, this star can falter, revealing its vulnerabilities.

祿存 The Abundance Star

A Star That Enhances and Bonds

The Star of Abundance shines brightest when paired with a major star. For example, in a familial palace, such as Siblings, Spouse, Children, Parents, or Friends, it fosters deeper connections and encourages a spirit of giving and investment in relationships. For instance, when located in the Spouse palace, it enhances emotional intimacy and support, promoting a stronger bond.

However, its power is conditional—it cannot function effectively in isolation. Without a major star to guide and protect it, the Star of Abundance struggles, much like a valuable resource left unutilized. Because what’s good about a power-up mushroom without Super Mario to use it?

The Dangers of Isolation

The Star of Abundance is always flanked by the Destruction Star (clockwise) and the Obstruction Star (counterclockwise). When left alone without the protection of a major star in a palace—known as an “empty court”—these neighboring ominous stars overshadow its potential, resulting in insecurity and a lack of fulfillment.

The placement of abundance, destruction and obstruction stars

For example, if the Star of Abundance is isolated in the Self palace, it reflects an upbringing marked by emotional distance from parents, leading to insecurity, frugality, and social withdrawal. Similarly, when found alone in the Spouse palace, it indicates emotional caution in romantic relationships, with a tendency to guard against vulnerability. In the Wealth palace, this isolation translates into extreme financial conservatism or even stinginess.

Unlocking Potential: Pairing with Major Stars

The Star of Abundance enhances the Major Star(s) when they are situated in the same palace. For example in a familial palace, it becomes a powerful force of generosity and thoughtfulness, tailored to the star it accompanies:

  • With The Martial Star (Wu Qu): Generosity with money.
  • With the Moon Star (Tai Yin): Generosity in care and emotional support.

Auspicious Formations

The Star of Abundance achieves its greatest potential when part of specific formations:

  • Crossing of Lu and Horse (祿馬交馳): When paired with the Heavenly Horse star (Tian Ma), either in the same or opposite palace, this formation signifies rewards through hard work and mobility—ideal for those who embrace change and action.
  • Crossing of the Lus (雙祿交馳): This occurs when the Abundance star aligns with an enriched star (Hua Lu) or another Abundance star within its triangle or opposite palace. It signifies immense fortune, especially when located in the Self, Wealth, or Property palaces.

These formations are celebrated in Zi Wei Dou Shu as hallmarks of prosperity and success, allowing individuals to fully harness the energy of abundance.

Final Thoughts

The Star of Abundance is a celestial gift, a bringer of surplus and harmony. Yet, its power is not inherent—it relies on the presence of a guiding major star and balanced formations to flourish. When properly supported, the Abundance star (Lu Cun) bestows wealth, connection, and generosity, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth.
