The Fundamentals of Imperial Astrology (Zi Wei Dou Shu)

Zi Wei Dou Shu Purple Star Astrology

Zi Wei Dou Shu, also known as Purple Star Astrology, is one of the most profound and accurate forms of Chinese metaphysics. Used for centuries to uncover an individual’s destiny, this astrological system offers deep insights into personality, career, relationships, and life path. By analyzing the position of stars in relation to a person’s birth chart, Zi Wei Dou Shu provides a roadmap to understanding one’s fate and making informed life decisions.

What is Imperial Astrology (Zi Wei Dou Shu)?

Zi Wei Dou Shu is a highly sophisticated system of Chinese astrology that maps out a person’s destiny based on the alignment of the stars at the time of birth. Unlike Western astrology, which primarily focuses on the positions of the planets, Zi Wei Dou Shu calculates the placement of 14 major stars, 6 auxiliary stars, 4 ominous stars, and numerous minor stars. Some schools of Zi Wei Dou Shu use as many as 159 stars, though mastery of interpretation often matters more than the number of stars considered.

The core foundation of Zi Wei Dou Shu is the natal chart. This chart is divided into 12 palaces, each governing different aspects of life, including personality, career, wealth, relationships, and health.

The Organizational Structure of Zi Wei Dou Shu

Zi Wei Dou Shu conceptualizes an individual as a structured entity, much like a modern corporation. In ancient interpretations, a person was seen as a nation, which is why certain stars were assigned roles such as the Emperor (Zi Wei) or the Prime Minister (Tian Xiang).

Three Angles and Four Pillars (三方四正)

In a well-organized company, decision-making isn’t solely dictated by the CEO; instead, multiple departments convene to discuss and reach a consensus. Therefore, the influence of a single palace does not stand alone—it is always part of a group of at least four interconnected palaces, known as the Three Angles and Four Pillars.

  • Three Angles – The three palaces forming a triangle.
  • Four Pillars – The three directional palaces plus the palace directly opposite.
Four-Pillar Alignment

For example, in relation to the Self Palace:

  • Self Palace – Core personality and decision-making approach.
  • Wealth Palace– Financial ability and resources.
  • Career Palace – Professional growth and achievements.
  • Travel Palace – Representing external interactions, social relationships, and internal thought processes.

Decision-Making as a Corporate Meeting

Ancient scholars believed that one’s fate is not solely determined by their Self Palace. Instead, it is shaped by a combination of career choices, financial management, and social interactions. These four palaces function like key executives in a company making strategic decisions:

  • Life Palace → The CEO – The core of personal identity and decision-making.
  • Travel Palace → The General Manager – Handles external affairs and public interactions, often the closest advisor to the CEO.
  • Wealth Palace → The Finance Department – Manages finances and resources.
  • Career Palace → The Operations Department – Oversees day-to-day activities and processes of the business.

When making significant life decisions, the “CEO” (Life Palace) must consult the three other key executives for a well-rounded decision.

The True Influence of Each Palace

Every one of the twelve palaces has its own unique interconnected group that affects its interpretation.

For example, the Spouse Palace is influenced by:

  • Career Palace – As career stability affects relationships.
  • Travel Palace – External interactions and personal disposition.
  • Fortune Palace – Psychological well-being and accumulated karmic blessings. Poor mental health or low luck often lead to difficult relationships.

Each palace forms its own “team,” meaning that while the primary palace remains the most visible influence, the supporting palaces play a crucial role in shaping outcomes.

The Role of 14 Major Stars

Imperial astrology revolves around 14 major stars, each with its unique characteristics.

How Zi Wei Dou Shu Works

In Zi Wei Dou Shu, various charts—Natal Chart (本命盤)Decade Chart (大限盤)Yearly Chart (小限盤), and Annual Chart (流年盤)—offer insights into different aspects of an individual’s life and external influences.

The Natal Chart

The Natal Chart is generated based on one’s birth time, showcasing inherent traits that influence an individual throughout their lifetime. While these characteristics are innate from birth, they don’t directly correspond to specific events or people encountered in life. For example, the Spouse Palace in the Natal Chart reflects one’s attitude and preferences toward relationships but doesn’t directly represent one’s partner.

Although the Natal Chart reveals a person’s inherent personality traits, abilities, and attitudes, even a promising chart doesn’t guarantee success. For instance, Vincent van Gogh’s unparalleled artistic talent was only recognized after his death, emphasizing the interplay of destiny and timing.

Decade Chart

The Decade Chart is structured around ten-year intervals, with each palace representing a decade in one’s life, forming the twelve palaces of the Decade Chart. Given its ten-year span, this chart encompasses both mindset and personality traits, as well as the events that arise from them.

As we progress through life, our perspectives and attitudes naturally evolve. For example, as we age, our attitudes toward relationships evolve, leading to changes that mirror these shifts in our relational outlook during each decade.

Yearly Chart

In the Yearly Chart, each palace represents a particular age, and the palace corresponding to one’s nominal age (虛歲), which refers to the traditional Chinese method of age reckoning. In this system, individuals are considered one year old at birth, and their age increases by one year at the start of each lunar new year, rather than on their actual birthday.

Each palace represents a particular age, and the palace corresponding to one’s current nominal age becomes the Self Palace for that year, forming the twelve palaces of the Yearly Chart. For example, in a given year, one’s personal feelings about a relationship might lead to the decision to marry.

Annual Charts

The Annual Chart is derived from the Chinese zodiac sign corresponding to each year, aligning with the earthly branches in one’s natal chart. This results in an annual Life Palace that is identical for everyone, symbolizing universal external influences such as economic conditions, political shifts we all experience simultaneously.

The Annual Chart highlights the importance of timing and environment. For example, some individuals thrive during economic recessions, while others face significant losses. The annual chart provides clarity on how external factors might shape one’s opportunities and challenges.
